CHAPTER 14

FAITH

Holy shit.

I feel like my stomach is about to fall out of my ass. I don’t know that I’ve ever been so nervous in my entire life as I walk toward Gingersnaps.

I kissed Nick.

I kissed him like a lovesick teenager. He came here to help my business, and I attempted to suck his face off.

We just had such a good time, and he was so nice. The fact that I threw myself at a man for simply being nice to me shows exactly the caliber of guys I’ve dated. Being nice should be a basic requirement, but I apparently consider it a reason to drop my panties.

Maybe I should talk to someone about that.

Yeah, I could probably benefit from some therapy. But first, I have to get through the next month…hopefully while keeping my pants on.

Do you know how hard that’s going to be with how attractive Nick Winters is? And now that I know how good he is at kissing?

Lord, help me.

This morning, I was so mortified that I was actually excited about taking Lucy to the doctor for her yearly check-up. It meant that I got to be late to work. It also meant no alone time with Nick.

But now that the appointment is over, I have to face the music. With every step from the parking lot to the front door of Gingersnaps, my heartbeat rings louder in my ears.

When I walk inside, Sasha is the only one I see. She’s wiping down some of the tables.

With a smile she greets, “Morning, boss.”

“Morning, Sash. Where is everyone?”

“In the back. We sold a lot of Danish this morning, so they’re making more.”

Gathering all the courage I can muster, I head through the swinging door into the kitchen. I’m a little surprised to see Nick wearing an apron and mixing up a giant bowl of dough.

“Good morning,” I say, causing them both to look at me.

They each say hi as they continue to work. Nick catches me off guard when he asks, “Is everything okay with Lucy?”

“Oh, yeah.” I wave my hand. “She’s fine. Growing like a weed, but you know, in a good way. Totally healthy. Healthy as a horse.”

For the love of God, Faith, stop talking!

My brain begs, but my mouth isn’t finished. “Where did that saying come from? Are horses generally healthier than other animals?”

AJ narrows his eyes at me. “Are you okay?”

“Me?” I cry. “I’m great.”

“Are you high or something?”

“Absolutely not,” I reply as my face contorts. “Oh, I think I hear my office phone ringing.”

Before either of them can say another word, I scurry off to my office. I barely get my bag set down before AJ comes barging in.

Looking at him, I ask, “How did you know I wasn’t on the phone?”

He gestures around the office. “Faith, you don’t have a phone in here.”

“Oh…right.”

“Do you want to tell me why you’re being weird?”

“What? I’m not being weird.”

He crosses his arms over his chest. “Cut the shit, Faith. This is me you’re talking to.
